HUNTINGTON BEACH
CALIFORNIA - MAY 1st, 2020
In the past if I heard about a protest on May 1st in Southern California, I would have only thought of the Marxist May Day protests in downtown LA. This year on May 1st conservative protestors held a rally on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Huntington Beach to protest the COVID 19 restrictions Governor Gavin Newsom had put on the state. People were protesting the closures of the beaches, churches, and small businesses like hair salons. Huntington Beach is known to be a blue-collar conservative town and has been a place of several protests this summer. When BLM planned a protest in their town the counter protest was larger than the BLM side.
I photographed this protest from the back-passenger seat of my son’s truck to keep good social distancing and it was perfect because I could photograph both sides of the street. It took us over an hour in traffic on PCH to get to the protest at the pier because so many cars were trying to drive through the protest site in support of it.
