ZZYZX
I remember seeing the Zzyzx Rd exit sign so many times as a kid in my parents’ station wagon heading to the Colorado River with the boat in tow. I am pretty sure I was first drawn to it because it looked so wrong, and I remember asking my mom about it. She explained how the person who made that road wanted to make it unique so he created the name so it would be the last road listed anywhere in the world.
I photographed everything and anything on the drive back from Boston in March, including road signs. Part of the idea was to keep track of where other images were from without geotagging them. I used to have a similar system when photographing baseball with film, photographing the scoreboard with the first frame of the roll for a reference point.
While editing all my images the concept for this portfolio came to me. I found the different signs interesting; they were documents of my travels and our country. I have continued photographing signs to add to this portfolio since returning back to Southern California.
