BLM Protests and Marches
June 3rd & 6th , 2020 Newport Beach, California
Rumors flew around Newport Beach, California on May 31st that looters were planning to hit Fashion Island, the city’s premiere shopping center. The mall fortified all entrances with temporary K-rails and extra security guards which may have deterred the attack.
On June 3rd a BLM protest was held near Fashion Island and the City Hall. The crowd was peaceful, and the atmosphere was more like a block party than a protest. Some Newport moms even set up a sign decoration table with puffy paints for the little kids. Also, by the 3rd many of the small shops in the Corona del Mar section of town had been boarded up and decorated with BLM artwork to deter more rumors of pending looting.
On June 6th there was another rally and march which started at Newport Harbor High School and went up Irvine Avenue. This march was also peaceful but had the potential not to be. The night before police found a suspicious pallet of bricks left on the sidewalk of Irvine Avenue.
